Last seen June 13th, 2017, Ashley Loring HeavyRunner, a 20-year indigenous woman, known for her contagious smile and athleticism, vanished from the Blackfeet Nation Indian Reservation. Just two weeks into her disappearance, after countless searches led by her sister, friends discovered potential evidence on the edge of the reservation near the town of Babb, a pair of red-stained boots and a tattered sweater. Cases like Ashley’s have unfortunately become a far too common occurrence. Her’s is one of the thousands of unsolved missing and murdered cases involving indigenous victims. Only 1 out of 4 of these cases appear in the media.
“Up and Vanished” Heads to Montana To Investigate the Disappearance of a Young Indigenous Woman for Season 3.
About the Show
Payne Lindsey returns as host for Season 3 of Up and Vanished, heading to North West Montana, searching for answers in the 2017 disappearance of Ashley Loring HeavyRunner.
In the US, Native American women are more than twice as likely to experience violence than any other demographic of people. American Indians and Alaskan Native women are murdered at a rate of 10 times the national average. They make up only 2% of the country’s population.
“As the Up and Vanished franchise continues to grow its audience and listenership, we have a responsibility to cover the cases involving communities of color that are too often overlooked. We hope to bring more attention to Ashley’s case, as a missing Indigenous woman, and to the epidemic of MMIW across the country,” says host Payne Lindsey.
With more than 2,300 missing indigenous women in the U.S. – Loring HeavyRunner’s story is among the few logged in the National Missing Persons database, according to the Urban Indian Health Institute which many are calling an Indigenous Missing Person data crisis.
